  1. 11-18-93                  Dialtone / BUSY  Problems

  3.      Some places (more often in Europe than in the US) or on some  in-house
  4. phone systems, the modem may not recognise Dialtone or BUSY, in rare  cases
  5. both.  In  this  case use X1, X2 or X3 in the dial prefix (ATX1DT)  or  the
  6. init  string. X1 will see neither Dialtone nor BUSY, X2 will  see  Dialtone
  7. only,  and  X3 will see the BUSY only. If the software/fax doesn't  have  a
  8. place  for  init, change call-progress to NONE.

  10.      There  is  also  X2  if you have trouble  with  false  BUSY,  but  can
  11. recognise dialtone (can happen w/voice answer fax machines).

  13.      Sometimes putting a '@' at the end of the dial string helps (after the
  14. phone  number, as that waits for 5 seconds of silence after the  other  end
  15. picks up the phone. (will wait for silence after a voice answer).

  17.      The  modem uses only 2 wires on the phone line, the center 2 wires.  A
  18. phone  which uses other wires can still get it's signals through the  other
  19. wires, even though the modem cannot see them.

  21.      If  you  have trouble dialing PULSE there is a command to  change  the
  22. pulse  make/break  ratio needed in some areas (usually overseas).  &P  (see
  23. your manual).
